How One Church Is Responding to New Shut Down Orders

Pastor John MacArthur of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California explained why that church followed the shut down orders the first time, but will not be doing so this time around. Here is part of what Pastor MacArthur had to say and you can click here to read the entire article from Christian Leaders website

Last week, John MacArthur and Grace Community Church, which is located in Sun Valley California, announced they would not be adhering to California Governor Gavin Newsom’s second round of closure orders. In his announcement, “Christ, not Caesar, Is Head of the Church”, MacArthur informed civic leaders that they had exceeded their legitimate jurisdiction, and that “faithfulness to Christ prohibits us from the restrictions they want to impose on our corporate worship services.”

Why Didn’t Grace Community Stay Open The First Time?

MacArthur addressed a question the church leadership has been asked a lot: “Why didn’t you do this at the beginning?” (IE: Defy the first stay-at-home order). He said, “We didn’t know the extent of the disease. We were told millions were going to die.” They were being protective because that was the sensible and rational thing to do given what everyone was being told about the coronavirus. “As time went on we found out that the virus wasn’t as deadly as predicted, and the commands not to assemble didn’t apply to protesters and riots.”

Philippians 4:6 New International Version (NIV)

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

This is exactly what we plan to do each night until the Lord leads us differently.

God’s Word Says “Fear Not”

Many people are very concerned, and when you read comments from the President and Vice-President it is very understandable that all folks should be taking precautions with it comes to the Coronavirus.

Earlier today, Vice-President Pence said the following the morning after President Trump addressed the nation about the pandemic the entire world is battling.

“There’s been some irresponsible rhetoric, but the American people should know President Trump has no higher priority than the health and safety and well being of the people of this country,”

Being irresponsible is totally unacceptable during this time, and that includes many pastors who have said things that have not helped the panic here in America and around the world.

All that being said, the Bible tells us in Isaiah 41:10; “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

The book of Joshua also tells us in Joshua 1:9; Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

While there are many who believe that this crisis is blown out of proportion and a huge number are panicking and are fearful that large parts of the population may die.

As in all things in life, prayer is needed and not panic. Faith in God to do what He says in the verses above is needed. We need not play politics in times of crisis – we need to trust God and FEAR NOT.
